Thank you from Afghanistan

Crofton Village Garden Club was pleased to hear from two recipients of the 100 holiday gift bags sent to deployed troops. Several members helped to fill the gift bags at an October workshop held in the conference room at Long & Foster Real Estate. Contents ranged from practical items like dental kits and socks to fun items, such as puzzle books, playing cards, or magic tricks – not to mention the candy canes and other snacks. There were even jingle bells attached to each bag!

This was the fourth year that our club has participated in Operation Christmas, which is spearheaded by one of our members and involves several local businesses and organizations.

Hi! My name is xxxx xxxxxx and I am stationed in Afghanistan, working with the U.S. Army in Kabul. On Christmas morning I was going to the gym, when I passed by some soldiers passing out some gift bags. I gratefully took one and opened it just a short time later.
I just wanted to take a few minutes to thank you for the generous donations you made to the men and women who are serving in the U.S. military. Your gifts made so many people smile today. Although we cannot be home with our families and friends during the holiday season, your kind thoughts definitely made our day a little bit brighter. We will surely remember you all as we put those items to good use. Please share our gratitude with everyone who made this possible.
Thanks again, and we hope you had a Merry Christmas!
And a second note…
Dear Friends,
It’s been a cold and smoggy day here at Camp Isaf in Kabul Afghanistan, but nonetheless we have taken the time to observe a few Christmas traditions — a Secret Santa Gift Exchange in the shop that I work in, the annual British vs. German Football Match (Britain won 3-0!), and a fairly decent meal at the dining facility. All the While, we still have been running the war as well, so rest assured, your tax dollars haven’t been wasted 🙂
I came across your card sitting on my desk today and thought I would take a second to write back and say thank you for your Christmas greetings and a little bit of cheer!
Hope all is well in Crofton, and that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and New Year! We’re all happy over here tonight and working on getting everyone home as soon as possible.
Best wishes, XXX XXXX
