It’s going to be fascinating!

Garden Club members were, indeed, “fascinated” by Bernie Robertson’s presentation at our monthly meeting on February 5, 2014.

Bernie announced that this year’s officer installation for Crofton Village Garden Club will be all about fun and fascination, beginning with member-made “fascinators.”

According to Wikipedia, “A fascinator is a headpiece, a style of millinery… In the modern usage, it refers to a woman’s alternative to hat for formal attire; it is usually a large hair decoration on a band or clip with elaborate trimmings and decoration like a formal hat and it can incorporate a base to make it a miniature hat.”

A search of Google images will provide garden club members with many photos for inspiration. Princess Kate is pictured in several of these photos, not to mention several guests at her royal wedding.  I guess we’ll be in good company, wearing our fascinators to the installation luncheon at our March meeting!

Garden Club members will meet at Marcia Richard‘s house on March 2 for a “Fascinator Party” and Bernie Robertson will be there to provide some hands-on help to members who are making their fascinators that day. Let Marcia know if you’re interested in participating.

Owl carving Sunny FrankSunny Frank also wowed members at the February meeting with her wood carving of an owl and beautiful photos during her presentation on owls. Click on this image to enlarge it.

All this, along with several other reports, before our guest speaker!

Robin Gill, president of Crofton Greenery Garden Club, talked to members about Bay-Wise certification. She noted that most Maryland residents live within a half-mile of a river, stream or storm drain which eventually feed into the Bay. Our landscaping practices can impact these waterways, and a few simple changes can go a long way to protecting the Bay from further damage.

Garden club members were challenged to work towards BayWise certification for their own yards and to encourage the practice throughout our community.  For more information visit the BayWise Program on the University of Maryland Extension website.
