May Day Flower Baskets in Annapolis

By Donna Jefferson, April 24, 2013 (re-blogged with permission)

In just one week, on May 1st, hundreds of people will come specifically to downtown Annapolis to see the May baskets hanging on front doors of both businesses and residences. This event has been held for 57 years and is coordinated by the volunteers of the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne.

Garden Club members spend hours creating and distributing publicity flyers to homes and businesses, walking the streets judging the baskets, and making the tea sandwiches and floral displays for the Winners Tea Party. And they do it all because making Annapolis a special place to live and work is important. So Hang a Basket this Year!  Annapolis may day basket

Everyone that displays a basket has a chance to win tickets to the private May Day Tea held on May 3rd in a Garden Club member’s home. All entries are judged against their peer group (so baskets on Main Street are competing against other businesses, not residences on Prince George Street). This is a chance to strut your stuff and get creative.

The rules are:
1. Baskets must be hung in place by 10 a.m. on May 1 for judging.
2. Businesses may use containers related to their business or a traditional basket.
3. Only fresh cut flowers and live materials may be used…no artificial elements.
4. Ribbons are a traditional part of a May Day Basket.

Businesses from West Annapolis, Eastport and West Street Business Associations can also participate by submitting baskets for display at Pocket Park on Main Street, which will encourage visitors to “Walk Annapolis” and visit businesses in these other shopping districts.

Due to the busy day scheduled on May 1, Crofton May Baskets will be judged by a committee of garden club members on May 2.
