Do You Know What a Tombola Is?

Many Crofton Village Garden Club members heard the word “tombola” for the first time at last week’s District II meeting in Bowie.

According to Wikipedia, “tombola” is a raffle – and this term was used to describe the raffle of lovely spring gift baskets at the meeting – one from each member club.  Here’s how it worked:

Raffle tickets were available at a central location, and then purchasers could use their ticket(s) for several baskets or, in some cases, use all their tickets for just their favorite(s).   There were several winners at our table, including Harriet Kiilehua who won the Easter-theme basket made by Barbara Emden – both members of our club.

The committee for our Plant It Pink Fashion Show and High Tea at Crofton Country Club on May 2 decided it was so much fun that we’re going to have a “tombola” at our event.  One of the items will be this wren house created by celebrated garden designer Jon Carloftis for Louisville Stoneware and Plant It Pink.

You may have seen this recently featured in Southern Living (October 2009), Better Homes and Gardens (August 2009), The Herb Companion (January 2010) and Design NJ (January 2010).

Keep watching here for additional tombola prizes to be announced over the next few weeks.
